The Azerbaijan Cycling Federation was first registered with the Ministry of Justice in 1992, but it started its extensive practical activities in 2012. The main goal of the Federation is to promote the development of cycling sports in our country, as well as to ensure that our cyclists prepare for the Olympics and other prestigious international competitions and achieve successful results.
Spreading the sport of cycling more widely among people - especially children and youth - and raising them in a healthy spirit are among the priority directions of the Azerbaijan Cycling Federation's activities.
The first international cycling race included in the calendar of the International Cycling Union (UCI) in Azerbaijan was the 2012 May tour held for under-23 youth in memory of our nation's National Leader Heydar Aliyev. One year later, the multi-stage cycling race called the Tour d’Azerbaijan, which earned its rightful place in the world cycling calendar, began to be organized.
In 2013, this race received category 2.2 and was warmly welcomed in the world cycling community. The following year, it was upgraded to category 2.1, and from then on, in addition to continental teams representing all continents of the world, professional (pro-continental) teams also began to participate.
The Tour d’Azerbaijan cycling race, consisting of 5 stages and covering nearly 900 km, has been organized annually along routes passing through various cities and districts of our country. In addition to being one of the main factors contributing to the development of cycling in Azerbaijan, the race has also become a highly effective means of introducing our increasingly beautiful country to the whole world and showcasing its tourism potential.

The park where Velopark is located was established in the early 1970s on the initiative of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev. By the early 1990s, due to neglect, the area had fallen into disrepair, and illegal constructions were built there. In September 2005, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, issued instructions to carry out cleaning operations in the park. In 2013, the park area was allocated as a base to the Azerbaijan Cycling Federation. Since then, the Federation has carried out large-scale landscaping and development work in the area. Thousands of trees have been planted, and four cycling routes, including trails for mountain biking, have been established for competitions.
A BMX Velopark, where the BMX competitions of the Baku 2015 First European Games were held, was also constructed within the Velopark area. In May 2015, President Ilham Aliyev attended the opening of the BMX Velopark. Special areas were designated here for high-profile guests, athletes, spectators with physical disabilities, and members of the press.
In June 2018, the BMX Velopark also hosted the World Championship in this sport. More than 1,500 athletes from over 100 countries around the world competed here for the championship medals.
The first cycling track in Azerbaijan was opened in 1980 on the initiative of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev, ahead of the Moscow Summer Olympic Games. At that time, the Republican Velotrack, considered one of the most modern tracks, had a concrete surface with a perimeter of 333.33 meters and covered a total area of 13 hectares.
In the early 1990s, due to neglect, the concrete surface of the velotrack was damaged, and a large part of its area had been occupied.
After the Azerbaijan Cycling Federation was reorganized, extensive reconstruction and landscaping work began on the velotrack area in 2012. The track’s concrete surface was completely rebuilt, and a new administrative building meeting modern standards, a mini-football field, a “Pump Park” for BMX rider training, two water reservoirs each with a capacity of 150 cubic meters, a boiler house, and other facilities were constructed.
The administrative building, with a total area of 4,620 square meters, houses the office of the Azerbaijan Cycling Federation, workrooms for cyclists, a mini-hotel, apartments for coaches, and other facilities.
In June 2015, the Board meeting of the European Cycling Union (UEC) was held at the Republican Velotrack.
The Mountain Biking Park, located in the Khocasən settlement, is one of the ideal venues for those who love this sport (MTB). The park’s routes vary in difficulty, making it perfect for both beginners and professional cyclists. Mountain trails, forested areas, and natural terrain form the park’s unique features, offering every cyclist an enjoyable and exciting experience.
The park was reconstructed in 2015 for the First European Games held in Baku and brought up to international standards. Special attention was paid to safety measures during the renovation.
The park features routes of varying lengths and difficulties, with natural downhill and uphill terrains and sharp turns, adding extra excitement to competitions.
